Advisory Board

The organizational structure for the Center for Microbial Pathogenesis and Host Inflammatory Responses (CMPHIR) includes an External Advisory Board. These Board members were chosen for relevant scientific expertise and demonstrated excellence in establishing and maintaining successful multi-investigator research programs.

The following scientists who serve in an external advisory capacity for the Center include:

  • Gus Kousoulas, Ph.D., Director – Division of Biotechnology & Molecular Medicine, Louisiana State University  School of Veterinary Medicine
    Research Interests – Molecular virology, gene therapy, vaccine development, cancer therapeutics; Focused on the molecular biology and pathogenesis of herpes simplex viruses (HSV) and human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) or Kaposi’s Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus (KSHV).
  • John Iandolo, Ph.D., Vice President for Research, University of Oklahoma Health Science Center
    Research Interests – Dr. Iandolo is studying predatory bacteria that attack and grow on gram negative bacteria. These fragile bacteria grow vigorously when susceptible bacteria are present, but die-off when prey disappear. His laboratory is focused a strain of Bdellovibrio that forms cysts as an innate survival mechanism allowing it to persist in nature in the absence of prey cells.
  • Liise-Anne Pirofski, M.D., Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine Selma and Dr. Jacques Mitrani Chair in Biomedical Research
    Research Interests – Dr. Pirofski’s laboratory focuses on immunity to encapsulated pathogens, specifically Cryptococcus and Pneumococcus, which are acquired by inhalation. Much of the work is based on the Damage-response framework, a theory of microbial pathogenesis.
  • Vance G. Fowler, M.D., MHS, Professor of Medicine and Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, Department / Division: Medicine / Medicine-Infectious Diseases
    Research Interests – Dr. Fowler studies determinants of outcome in patients with Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia, pathogenesis of bacterial infections, infections due to resistant gram positive organisms, and tropical medicine/international health
